An investigation to architectural form, space and density based on design research and urban analysis
The investigation begins with:
How do we experience public space based on the analytics of urban program, density and time ?
Can the manipulation of architectural form and space, in response to change in urban density and program, facilitate a measured experience?
Can architectural form interpret the mechanisms of cybernetic responses to manipulate or define urban density?
(2) Urban sites were investigated as to their programmatic densities throughout the day. This provided research and data of the invisible programmatic forces to influence the area of each site. Programs, such as commercial, residential and institutional, were observed in an effort to stimulate an analysis of where and when higher densities of interactions occurred throughout the day.
This research is then taken and mapped into a matrix which is manipulated into an architectural form defined by Formulative. As this particular project was driven through a notion of cybernetic responsive systems and architectural machines, the idea is that the data and research gathered from the urban analysis can be plugged into an architectural pavilion to abstract or synthesize urban nodes in the area. Furthermore, with the right mechanics and technology, the concept is that the architecture itself becomes a cybernetic machine which influences urban density not only in the site but in the greater area.
The architecture of Formulative is interpreted into (3) types of "intensity" spaces defined through columns and tensile fabric. This provides a structure for a canopy with volumetric spatial capacity, in representation of the urban interaction and activity in the area. The height(s) of the canopy are manipulated by columns which determine the space in the following (3) kinds of environments:
1) Low 4' - Closed/Exterior Proximity
A Closed area will define the low density of urban program in the area at a specific time in day.
2) Medium 8' - Single Height/Intimiate Space
A single height provides a more intimate interior enclosure while emphasizing a medium level of density in the urban program at a specific time in day.
3) High 12-16' - Double Height/Open Space
A double height provides a more open public interior space while emphasizing a high level of density in the urban program at a specific time in day.
Throughout these environments rotating wall panels manipulate spaces, while providing spatial partitions and platforms for exhibition display. The panels also operate as thermal mass for environmental or solar applications, as they rotate accordingly to receive the most solar energy in order to illuminate the space in the evening.
Formulative provides a narrative of density and awareness in an urban public node. It is a reactive urban canopy intervention that promotes reciprocity and a data-driven dialogue between residents and their urban environments. The city is driven by invisible forces of economies, real estate (when I say real estate, I mean control of land property) and policies that influence our activities and concentrations. Formulative is set to create awareness of this multi-layered impact and to spark conversations by contributing to a display of collective interest in the city's complexity.
